Authorities at the Headquarters Theatre Command of Operation Hadin Kai have launched an investigation into allegations that troops shot and killed a man identified as Abdulrahman Mustapha, also known as Abchin, in Maiduguri on 22 March 2026.
The incident reportedly occurred at the Polo Axis near the Federal High Court, with claims on social media alleging that the deceased was unarmed and returning from a Sallah visit when he was shot.
The allegations have been described online as an extrajudicial killing, with calls for accountability, transparency, and an independent probe.
In response, the Theatre Command said it takes the matter seriously and has commenced a full investigation to establish the true circumstances.
Preliminary assessments suggest the incident may involve wider security concerns beyond what has been reported on social media.
Initial findings indicate troops may have encountered suspected Boko Haram or ISWAP-linked reconnaissance activity or a possible sleeper cell in the area.
The Command said the deceased allegedly attempted to disarm a soldier during the encounter, describing it as a direct threat.
It was also reported that he had multiple identity documents bearing different names, including one linked to the Niger Republic, raising questions about identity and movement.
He was said to have been found with a bottle of cough syrup and suspected cannabis, while two unidentified women reportedly fled the scene.
The Theatre Command stressed that all findings remain preliminary and subject to verification as investigations continue.
It assured that the outcome will follow due process and reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and human rights.
