Former Senegal coach and Teranga Lions legend, Aliou Cissé, has listed Nigeria’s Super Eagles as one of the leading candidates for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in Morocco.
Cissé made the remarks following Libya’s exit from the Arab Cup playoffs on Tuesday. When asked about Senegal’s chances of reclaiming the continental crown, the former defender expressed optimism for his home nation but also acknowledged the high level of competition expected at the tournament.
“I hope it will be Senegal, because I come from Senegal and my heart is with Senegal,” Cissé said.
Beyond Senegal, Cissé identified several other strong contenders capable of lifting the trophy, including host nation Morocco, Algeria, record champions Egypt, and Nigeria, who finished as runners-up in the last edition of AFCON.
“Apart from Senegal, there are many teams capable of winning this AFCON. Morocco is also a contender, Algeria, Egypt, Nigeria,” he added.
Cissé also underscored the unpredictable nature of the African football showpiece, noting that, unlike the FIFA World Cup, AFCON often defies predictions, making the tournament a thrilling spectacle for fans across the continent.
