Fulham playmaker Alex Iwobi has taken full accountability for his late-game expulsion during Nigeria’s recent international friendly against Jordan. The Super Eagles midfielder expressed deep regret over the incident, which occurred during a 2-2 draw on March 31 in Turkey, where he was shown a red card following a physical altercation with Jordan’s Amer Jamous.
The confrontation was sparked when Jamous restrained the former Arsenal man, leading to a heated retaliatory action from Iwobi that resulted in his immediate removal from the pitch. Acknowledging that his conduct fell short of professional standards, the seasoned international utilized a media appearance to address the Nigerian public and his colleagues directly.
Speaking on the Alexander Yaa Digg podcast, Iwobi was candid about the lapse in discipline: “I need to address what I did and apologise to all my Nigerian teammates, staff, and everyone who cares about Nigeria. My actions were not good enough, and I got sent off.”
Despite the personal setback, Iwobi sought to focus on the collective resilience of the squad, noting that the team managed to maintain their unbeaten status in the match. He emphasized his intention to use the experience as a catalyst for personal growth within the national team setup.
“But I will learn from this and keep moving on. We got a draw, we did not lose, so we will take the positives. I want to apologise for the mistake,” the midfielder added.
As the Super Eagles conclude their window of friendly fixtures, Iwobi’s focus remains on moving past the disciplinary error and regaining his place as a reliable leader in the squad. His public admission of fault is seen as a vital step in maintaining the team’s internal harmony ahead of future competitive engagements.
