Former Central Police Station OCS Samson Talaam and five others, accused of murdering blogger Albert Ojwang four months ago will remain in custody after they were denied bond by the Kibera High Court.
Declining to release Talaam, James Mukhwana, Peter Kimani, John Ngige Gitau, Jim Ambao and Brian Njue, Justice Diana Kavedza said the case is of great public interest.
Justice Kavedza said Talaam, Mukhwana and Kimani “are police officers who still wield a lot of power given their training and may interfere with witnesses.”
The judge noted there was interference with the CCTV of Central Police Station before the arrest of the accused.
She also said the killing of Ojwang sparked countrywide demonstrations, leaving a trail of destruction of property, including the burning of Mawengo police station.
She said relatives of the deceased have expressed fear for their lives.
However, Justice Kavedza allowed the accused to seek a review bail application after key witnesses testified.
