Former Newcastle United and England striker, Alan Shearer, has cast doubt over Aston Villa’s ability to sustain their challenge for the Premier League title, despite acknowledging the impressive position the club currently occupies under manager Unai Emery.
Shearer made it clear that while Aston Villa have earned a place in the current title discussion because of their league standing, he believes their momentum may not last the full course of the season amid fierce competition at the top of the Premier League table.
Aston Villa endured a difficult and inconsistent start to the campaign, spending time in the relegation zone before producing a dramatic turnaround in form. From sitting as low as 18th in the table, Emery’s side have surged up the Premier League standings and now occupy third place, marking one of the most remarkable recoveries of the season.
Their title credentials received major attention last weekend after they recorded a vital 2-1 victory over leaders Arsenal at Villa Park, a result that significantly reduced the gap between them and the summit of the table and strengthened their position among potential contenders.
However, despite recognising their recent form, Shearer remained unconvinced that Villa can maintain their current level over the course of the entire season.
Speaking on The Rest is Football, Shearer said:
“I don’t think they will win it but they have to have put themselves into the conversation.
“I don’t expect their brilliant run to continue. I don’t know… but you have to talk about them because of the way they’re playing, the results they’re getting and how consistent they’ve been.”
