Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has urged Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres to improve his goal-scoring record, insisting that the club overpaid for the Swedish forward.
Speaking on during a podcast, Shearer said the 27-year-old must deliver more goals if he is to justify his £57 million move from Sporting Lisbon last summer.
Gyokeres has so far managed just three goals in 11 appearances across all competitions for Mikel Arteta’s side, and he failed to find the net in Arsenal’s 1–0 victory over Fulham at the weekend.
“I think they [Arsenal] have paid too much for him [Viktor Gyokeres]. I would say the same with Benjamin Sesko at Manchester United,” Shearer said.
“He’s definitely going to have to score more goals. But I do think he brings something to the Arsenal team. One of his positives is that he runs in behind, which helps create space for others to exploit.
But there’s no doubt he’s got to improve his numbers because we said it last season — what Arsenal have needed, cried out for, is a goal scorer.”
Arsenal currently sit three points clear at the top of the Premier League, but with title rivals Manchester City and Liverpool close behind, Shearer believes Gyokeres’ contribution in front of goal could be crucial to the Gunners’ title ambitions.
