Former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi, has praised Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, for his composure and leadership in Nigeria’s 2-1 victory over Lesotho on Friday.
Akpeyi lauded the centre-back for stepping up to take the crucial penalty that gave Nigeria the lead in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Polokwane, South Africa.
Troost-Ekong’s performance drew attention after a period of criticism from fans and pundits over recent mistakes, including an own goal against South Africa and a costly error in the 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe earlier in the qualifiers.
Speaking on SuperSport, Akpeyi commended the captain’s mental strength and maturity.
“This game is more mental because at this point in time if you begin to panic, you might lose it easily. And with the Nigerian spirit I know, they will push until the end,” Akpeyi said.
“For Troost-Ekong to step up after being criticised in the last game and take that penalty shows true leadership — something only senior players can do.”
Nigeria will next face Benin Republic on Tuesday in their final qualifying match in Uyo, as they continue their push for a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada, the USA, and Mexico.
