President of the African Development Bank Group, Dr Akinwumi A. Adesina, has congratulated former Minister of Culture, Tourism and National Orientation, High Chief Edem Duke, on his 70th birthday, describing him as a patriotic leader whose contributions have left a lasting impact on Nigeria’s tourism landscape.
In a congratulatory message, Dr Adesina joined Duke’s family and well-wishers in thanking God for his life and achievements, recalling fond memories of their time together in the Federal Executive Council during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
“I greatly admired your high level of dedication, passion, patriotic fervour and professionalism,” Adesina wrote. “You brought Nigeria’s tourism to the fore with your creativity and ability to work effectively in forging public and private partnerships.”
He commended Duke for his grace and eloquence during council meetings, particularly when called upon by the President to lead prayers, noting that he always did so with “elegance, poise and colour.”
Adesina highlighted Duke’s long and distinguished career in public service, including his roles in the Nigerian National Petroleum Company, as Chairman of the Federation of Tourism Association of Nigeria, and as Chairman of the Calabar Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture.
He further praised Duke’s communication skills and refined sense of style, describing them as hallmarks of his persona that helped project a positive image of Nigeria’s tourism sector both locally and internationally. “Your immense contributions to Nigeria’s tourism sector will continue to endure,” Adesina added.
Concluding the letter, Dr Adesina extended warm wishes on behalf of himself and his wife, Grace, saying: “May your years ahead be fulfilling, rewarding, bountiful, in good health, joy and vitality.”
