A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Imo State, Success Akagburuonye, has downplayed ongoing debates around zoning and equity, insisting that the emergence of the next governor of the state will ultimately be determined by God’s will rather than political arrangements or human consensus.
Speaking during an interview on Arise News on Sunday, Akagburuonye argued that zoning can only be meaningful if it aligns with divine purpose, stressing that no political leader or structure can override God’s decision in the affairs of Imo State.
“If God is choosing the next governor from a zone, even the governor himself cannot stop it,” he said.
He explained that while political actors are free to make declarations or promises regarding zoning, such pronouncements remain subject to divine approval, noting that human intentions do not always align with God’s plan.
“If he said it on his own and God has not approved it, that’s not to say that a human being can do whatever they want, but it’s God’s choice,” Akagburuonye stated.

The APC chieftain further described the current governor as a product of divine intervention, insisting that his rise to power was not engineered by political godfathers or elite interests but by what he described as God’s direct choice.
“From my analysis of what happened during the election to his swearing-in, I believe he had no godfather,” he said.
Akagburuonye maintained that the governor’s freedom from godfatherism has enabled him to pursue reforms and take decisive actions across the state, adding that his performance in office is evident to residents.
“Even the blind could see that he is working,” he added.
He also dismissed claims that zoning has been completely sidelined, arguing instead that God can still use existing political structures to achieve balance and fairness if He so desires.
“If God has said the next governor will come from a zone, human opinion does not matter,” Akagburuonye said.
According to him, political actors must learn to accept outcomes beyond their control, noting that leadership emergence often transcends negotiations, agreements, and power calculations.
“You can say this today, tomorrow it can change. It is only God that brings things to pass,” he stated.
Reaffirming his position, Akagburuonye concluded that Imo State’s political future should not be reduced to zoning formulas or elite bargaining, insisting that divine will remains the ultimate deciding factor in governance and leadership succession.
“When God has decided, nobody can stop it,” he said.
