Allen Onyema says local tickets cost less than $60 despite public complaints over high fares
The Chairman and CEO of Air Peace, Allen Onyema, has stated that Nigerians are still paying some of the lowest domestic airfares in the world, despite recent public complaints about ticket costs.
Speaking on Arise Television on Sunday, Onyema compared fares in Nigeria with international rates, noting that a one-hour flight abroad can cost over $400, while in Nigeria, travelers can still book tickets for ₦125,000 (less than $60).
He added that the relatively low fares contribute to the high failure rate of domestic airlines, with over 80 carriers having entered and exited the market over the years. “They should allow airlines to breathe,” Onyema urged, emphasizing the need for a sustainable operating environment for carriers in Nigeria.
