The President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Abubakar Yakubu, has commended Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo for appointing Nollywood actress Mercy Johnson-Okojie as Special Adviser on Public Engagement and Advocacy.
Yakubu spoke on Thursday at the Guild’s national headquarters in Abuja, describing the appointment as a significant milestone for the Nigerian film industry. He said the development reflects Nollywood’s expanding influence beyond entertainment into governance and national development.
According to him, the governor has shown consistent support for the Guild and the creative sector. He referenced Edo State’s hosting of the AGN National Conference in December, which drew participants from more than 30 states.
“To appoint one of our distinguished members as Special Adviser just months later is a source of pride to the Guild and the entire creative ecosystem,” Yakubu said.
He added that Johnson-Okojie’s wide public appeal, communication strengths and grassroots reach make her well-suited for the role.
Governor Okpebholo, in announcing the appointment, described the actress as an accomplished performer, producer, entrepreneur and philanthropist. He noted that her career spans nearly two decades and includes appearances in over 200 films.
The governor also cited her advocacy work through the Mercy Johnson-Okojie Foundation, which focuses on women’s empowerment, child welfare, education and healthcare support.
Johnson-Okojie is married to Odianosen Okojie, who represents Esan North East/Esan South East Federal Constituency of Edo State in the House of Representatives.
Yakubu said the appointment reinforces the Guild’s commitment to deepening collaboration between Nollywood and government institutions, positioning the creative industry as a key stakeholder in Nigeria’s development.
