The African Union has condemned the US actions in Venezuela, describing the operation as an abduction that violates international law. The organisation is demanding respect for Venezuela’s sovereignty following a deadly military operation that left at least 40 people dead and resulted in the capture of President Nicolás Maduro.
The dramatic Delta Force raid on the presidential residence in Caracas on Saturday saw Maduro and his wife seized from their bedroom, but at a devastating human cost.
Maduro is being held at a Brooklyn detention centre and is expected to be arraigned on Monday. The United Nations has described the operation as a dangerous precedent and has scheduled an emergency Security Council meeting also on Monday.
President Donald Trump has said the United States will “run Venezuela” and take control of its oil industry.
