The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has revealed that Aero Contractors refunded over ₦257 million to passengers between January and August 2025, marking a 137.4% increase compared to the same period in 2024.
In a statement released on Friday, the aviation regulator said the figure reflects improved compliance with Part 19 of the NCAA Consumer Protection Regulations 2023, which outlines mandatory timelines and processes for passenger refunds.
“Total refund paid between January and August 2025 was ₦257,195,724.39, compared to ₦108,308,037.40 in 2024 and ₦32,766,652.30 in 2023,” the NCAA said.
The authority also disclosed that Aero Contractors spent a total of ₦6,083,229 on hotel accommodation (HOTAC) for affected passengers from January to July 2025.
The verified accommodations were provided through partnerships with:
- Cocos Hotel
- Grand Cubana Hotel (Abuja)
- NOCY Castle Hotel
- Kim Royal Hotel
- JC42 Apartment (Asaba)
- Mayor & Diplomat Hotel (Lagos)
The NCAA described the airline’s refund performance as a “remarkable improvement”, especially in light of the challenges facing the aviation industry.
“While acknowledging the peculiar challenges of our operating environment, the Authority will continue to protect the rights of all stakeholders,” the statement added.
In December 2024, Michael Achimugu, NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, had warned that airlines would face sanctions for failing to comply with the refund timelines set out in the revised consumer protection rules.
According to the regulations:
- Cash ticket purchases must be refunded immediately and in cash.
- Electronic payments including mobile apps and online banking must be refunded within 14 days.
Achimugu emphasised that the NCAA would not hesitate to take action against carriers failing to uphold these obligations.
