Human rights lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has criticised the recent increase in petrol prices by the Dangote Refinery, describing it as exploitative and harmful to Nigerians.
In a statement, Adeyanju alleged that the refinery raised the pump price of fuel by over 100 per cent, attributing the hike to tensions in the Gulf region following the Iran conflict.
He questioned the justification for the increase, noting that the refinery sources crude oil locally and that the Federal Government had approved the sale of crude to the refinery in naira through the Nigerian National Petroleum Company.
Adeyanju further argued that the refined products currently being supplied were processed before the recent escalation of hostilities, insisting that global tensions should not affect the pricing of existing stock.
He also raised concerns over what he described as a near-monopoly in the downstream sector, alleging that the refinery’s dominant position limits competition and leaves consumers vulnerable to arbitrary price adjustments.
The activist, therefore called on the government to intervene to protect Nigerians from what he termed unjustified fuel price increases. Change script
