Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri has granted clemency to a death-row inmate and seven other prisoners as part of activities marking the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
According to a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Humwashi Wonosikou, one of the beneficiaries is Sunday Jackson, who had been sentenced to death and is currently held at the Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre.
Also pardoned are Joseph Eugene of the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Yola and Maxwell Ibrahim, who is serving a sentence at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kaduna.
The remaining beneficiaries — Joshua James Audo, Adamu Ibrahim, Mohammed Abubakar, Ibrahim Usman, and Saidu Abubakar — are inmates at the Medium Security Custodial Centres in Numan and Jada. Their remaining sentences have been remitted.
Governor Fintiri said the decision followed clear evidence of positive behavioural change and good conduct by the inmates during their time in custody.
“Consequently, in the exercise of my prerogative of mercy as provided for in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and in line with the recommendations of the Adamawa State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, I have granted full pardons to three individuals and approved the remission of the remaining sentences of five others,” the governor said.
He added that the gesture reflects the spirit of forgiveness and renewal associated with the festive season, while also reinforcing the importance of rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
