
At least eight people have died following the outbreak of a flesh-eating ulcer, suspected to be Buruli ulcer, in Malabu community, Fufore Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
The Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Felix Tangwami, confirmed the fatalities on Tuesday evening while briefing journalists in Yola, describing the development as deeply alarming.
Tangwami said that samples from affected patients have been collected and dispatched to the National Reference Laboratory for testing and confirmation of the disease.
According to Tangwami, “Some of the surviving patients are currently receiving specialised medical attention at the Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital, Yola,” he said.
The commissioner assured dedicated medical team is working round the clock to stabilise patients and manage reported cases.
“Measures include the deployment of emergency response teams, public awareness campaigns, and the provision of medical supplies to the affected community,” Tangwami said.
The commissioner urged strict personal hygiene and report any unusual skin ulcers or swellings promptly to the nearest health facility for early intervention.
He added that the state government is working in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and other development partners to contain the situation.
