Following the deadly December 8 shooting in Lamurde, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State has initiated a judicial panel of inquiry to investigate the incident and promote peace in affected communities.
The governor made the announcement during a visit to Lamurde and five other communities in the Suwa District, assuring residents that the panel would conduct a transparent and thorough investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the tragedy and ensure justice for the victims.
Governor Fintiri called for calm and emphasized the state government’s commitment to due process, accountability, and reconciliation. He revealed that the Adamawa State Peace Commission has been engaging youths, elders, religious leaders, and community representatives to de-escalate tensions and foster dialogue.
Describing the deaths of the women and the young girl as “most unfortunate,” the governor said the victims were innocent and defenseless. He added that the judicial panel, chaired by a retired High Court judge, will investigate both the immediate and underlying causes of the crisis and recommend measures for lasting peace between the Bachama and Chobo communities.
Governor Fintiri also assured families of the victims of government support for education and livelihoods. During his visit, he inspected damaged areas and pledged an increased security presence to safeguard lives and property.
Emergency agencies, including the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), have been deployed to provide relief materials and assistance to displaced persons, with the governor noting that security challenges will not hinder humanitarian efforts.
Stressing that peace remains the only viable option, Governor Fintiri said the government will continue working with all stakeholders, including religious and community leaders, to promote dialogue, understanding, and mutual trust.
Speaking on behalf of the affected communities, District Heads, appealed for decisive government action to ensure lasting reconciliation and stability.
