Nollywood actress and filmmaker Toyin Abraham has acknowledged that her public support for Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election had negative consequences for her career.
The actress made the remark while speaking to fellow actor Timini Egbuson, offering advice on how to improve the box office success of his film.
During the conversation, Abraham urged the younger actor to avoid openly taking sides in political matters, suggesting that neutrality can help protect a public figure’s career.
“The first advice I will give you in my entire life is don’t put your mouth in politics,” she said. “Don’t tell them you’re supporting anybody. Don’t support anybody. Just be on your own and remain neutral.”
When Egbuson reminded her that she had previously endorsed Tinubu during the election period, Abraham dismissed it briefly, saying it was in the past.
However, she later admitted that the decision had consequences, revealing that the reaction from some members of the public affected her professional life.
Abraham’s endorsement of Tinubu during the election campaign drew widespread criticism online. The backlash reportedly extended to her 2023 film Malaika, which became the subject of a piracy controversy after copies were widely circulated on WhatsApp.
At the time, some social media users openly vowed to boycott the film because of her political position.
Reacting to the criticism then, Abraham questioned why her political choice attracted backlash, stating that people should not be condemned for supporting their preferred candidate.
Despite the controversy, the actress has continued to maintain a visible presence in Nollywood, producing and starring in new projects while engaging with fans online.
