Nigerian actor Michael Ejoor has spoken candidly about his long struggle with clinical depression and multiple suicide attempts.
In a revealing interview with Jay On Air, Ejoor disclosed that he was diagnosed with clinical depression 14 years ago, a period marked by despair and self-harm. He recounted one of his darkest moments when he deliberately walked into the path of a moving car in the UK.
“Growing up, I was secluded. I thought everybody hated me. I even thought my dad hated me. I didn’t think anybody liked me. I didn’t think anything was going well for me,” he said.
The actor explained that depression left him living without plans or hope, making it difficult to think about the future.
“I didn’t want to think about tomorrow. The worst question you could ask me was my five-year goal. I didn’t even want to be alive tomorrow,” he added.
Despite the pain of his past, Ejoor noted that his relationship with his father has since transformed, today, he considers him his best friend.
His openness sheds light on the silent struggles many face with mental health issues, particularly in the entertainment industry, where public perception often masks private pain.
Ejoor’s story comes at a time when conversations around mental health and suicide prevention are gaining traction in Nigeria, underscoring the need for empathy and support for those battling depression.
