The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has moved to clarify the reasons behind the scaled-down Abuja–Kaduna train operations, dismissing reports that the slowdown resulted from managerial lapses or lack of attention.
According to the corporation, the temporary adjustment in train frequency is linked to lingering effects of the March 2022 terrorist attack on the corridor and a recent derailment that impaired critical rolling stock. NRC said it is intensifying efforts to stabilise services and return to normal scheduling.
In a statement issued yesterday, NRC’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Callistus Unyimadu, explained that the situation is not a sign of neglect but a reflection of ongoing challenges that stem from unavoidable incidents.
Unyimadu acknowledged the inconveniences faced by passengers in recent weeks but stressed that the corporation is navigating a crucial phase of recovery and system restoration.
He noted that the 2022 attack, which resulted in casualties and widespread distress, compelled the NRC to undertake significant adjustments to its security and operational procedures.
He further stated that the August 26 derailment created another setback by damaging the flagship Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) coaches, thereby shrinking the number of trains available for daily deployment.
Unyimadu added that repairs and refurbishment are being carried out with urgency, while arrangements for additional coaches are underway to enable the swift return of full operations.
He said: “The reduction in service frequency is not the result of neglect or indifference. It is the direct outcome of the 2022 terrorist attack and the recent derailment incident, which damaged several coaches.
“We reassure our esteemed passengers that these challenges do not represent a decline in our commitment. They reflect a phase of recovery, restoration and rebuilding”.
Bringing the statement to a close, the NRC emphasised that it remains focused on restoring stability to the Abuja–Kaduna corridor. The corporation reiterated that the Federal Government, through President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the active oversight of the Minister of Transport, is providing the necessary support to ensure a full and timely return to normal rail operations.
