Actor Abubakar Yakubu has emerged as the new President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), narrowly defeating Rita Daniels, mother of actress Regina Daniels, in a closely contested election.
The vote took place on Saturday during the AGN annual general meeting in Benin, Edo State. Yakubu, the guild’s National Secretary, received 116 votes, edging out Rita Daniels, who secured 113 votes, while three ballots were declared invalid.
Yakubu’s victory marks a historic milestone, as he becomes the first Northern actor to lead AGN since its founding in the 1990s. He succeeds Emeka Rollas, who recently suggested that Rita Daniels focus on her daughter Regina’s well-being rather than pursuing the presidency.
The election highlights the competitive nature of the guild’s leadership race, reflecting the growing diversity and representation within Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
With Yakubu at the helm, stakeholders anticipate new initiatives aimed at strengthening the guild and fostering inclusivity for actors across all regions of Nigeria.
