The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has formally recognised the National Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Abdulrahman Mohammed and backed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Mohammed, alongside the party’s Acting National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, represented the PDP at INEC’s first quarterly consultative meeting with officials of registered political parties.
This meeting is traditionally reserved for national chairmen and national secretaries, signalling the commission’s official acceptance of the Mohammed-led caretaker leadership.
The development follows a ruling by the Federal High Court in Ibadan, which directed INEC to recognise the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led committee as the legitimate leadership of the PDP, putting to rest disputes over the party’s national administration.
INEC’s recognition now formally positions the Wike-backed caretaker committee to represent the PDP in official engagements and party matters, reinforcing the court’s judgment and clarifying leadership within one of Nigeria’s major political parties.
