Tension is rising ahead of the August 15 Osun governorship election after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission placed a no-post-debit restriction on the accounts of the state government.
The directive, contained in a letter dated August 5 and addressed to First Bank Plc, was issued under provisions of the EFCC Establishment Act and the Money Laundering Prevention and Prohibition Act.
Reacting to the development, Governor Ademola Adeleke accused the commission of targeting his administration, describing the action as an attempt at intimidation ahead of the election.
Addressing a press conference at the Government House, Osogbo, Adeleke said his administration would challenge the decision in court, arguing that the restriction was imposed without a court order.
The governor also alleged a pattern of harassment against opposition figures in the state, including arrests and attacks on political actors, while accusing federal agencies of undermining democracy.
Adeleke, however, insisted that the development would not distract his administration from its re-election campaign, declaring that āno amount of victimisation or desperation by the oppositionā would stop his return to office.
