Veteran Nigerian entertainer John Odafe Asiemo, popularly known as Daddy Showkey, has clarified why he is marking 50 years on stage this year, despite approaching his 57th birthday.
Speaking during an interview on Arise TV ahead of his birthday on August 4, the “Galala” pioneer explained that the celebration reflects his entire journey in the entertainment industry—not just his years as a recording artiste.
According to Daddy Showkey, his career began at the age of six when he performed as an acrobat before later making appearances on television.
He recalled featuring in programmes such as Village Headmaster after first appearing on the Bar Beach Show in 1976, noting that his early television experience laid the foundation for his career.
The singer also acknowledged veteran actor Adejumo Lewis for giving him his first major opportunity after spotting his talent in Ajegunle.
Explaining the significance of the anniversary, Daddy Showkey said many people mistakenly assume the milestone refers only to his music career.
“I started appearing on television in 1976… I started when I was six years old. I’m not just celebrating Daddy Showkey the musician, but Daddy Showkey as an entertainer,” he said.
He urged parents to identify and nurture their children’s talents from an early age, adding that documenting their progress can help preserve their achievements over time.
Describing himself as a former child star, Daddy Showkey also expressed gratitude to his mother for supporting him during the early years of his career, saying her encouragement played a key role in shaping his journey in the entertainment industry.
