Malawi have created WAFCON history by becoming the first debutant side to defeat Nigeria at the continental tournament since its inception in 1998.
The Scorchers marked their first appearance at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations with a stunning 3-2 victory over the 10-time champions at the Al Madina Stadium in Rabat.
Temwa Chawinga and her sister Tabita Chawinga scored three second-half goals to secure the landmark win for Malawi, while Nigeria responded through Rasheedat Ajibade and Uchenna Kanu.
The defeat ended Nigeria’s unbeaten record against WAFCON debutants, having previously won 16 and drawn one of their 17 matches against first-time participants at the tournament.
Malawi’s victory now stands as a historic moment, as the Scorchers secured a memorable triumph over the Super Falcons on their first appearance at the African championship.
