Nigeria has opened its medal account at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, with Roland Ezuruike securing a silver medal in the men’s Lightweight Group A Powerlifting event.
Ezuruike finished with 153.9 points from two successful lifts and came within touching distance of the gold, narrowly missing the Games record of 190kg on his final attempt.
England’s Mark Swan claimed the gold medal, while Malaysia’s Bonnie Bunyau Gustin settled for bronze after lifting 153.5kg.
Fellow Nigerian Ibrahim Dauda also impressed, placing fifth in the event with a lift of 140.1kg.
In basketball, Team Nigeria’s men’s 3×3 side began its Pool A campaign on a winning note, defeating the Cayman Islands 21–17.
