Nigeria’s security challenges may have links beyond its borders, according to presidential spokesman Daniel Bwala, who says foreign nationals suspected of involvement in insecurity have been arrested during military operations.
Speaking on The Link Up Podcast hosted by EchoRoom, Bwala said some external actors may have strategic and economic interests connected to Nigeria’s security situation.
He cited the display of Russian flags during protests in parts of northern Nigeria as a development that raised concerns over possible foreign influence.
Bwala disclosed that troops had arrested foreign nationals during operations but said their identities were withheld to protect diplomatic engagements.
He added that allegations of foreign involvement in terrorism require proper investigation, while referencing comments by U.S. Congressman Scott Perry questioning the CIA over similar claims.
The presidential aide said Boko Haram and ISWAP have expanded activities beyond the North-East, but maintained that security agencies are working to prevent further spread.
He dismissed claims that the military shields terrorists, describing such accusations as speculation, while admitting that isolated cases of infiltration within security agencies cannot be ruled out.
Bwala said improved coordination among security agencies has strengthened operations, adding that the government’s performance will ultimately be measured by results.
