Chinese President, Xi Jinping, has called for greater international cooperation in the development and governance of artificial intelligence, warning against allowing any single country to dominate the rapidly evolving technology.
Speaking at the opening of the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, Xi said AI should be developed through global collaboration rather than competition.
He also urged countries to avoid expanding national security restrictions in ways that could hinder international cooperation, stressing that no nation’s security should come at the expense of others.
Xi’s remarks come as Chinese artificial intelligence models continue to gain global attention, offering lower-cost alternatives while narrowing the gap with leading United States developers.
The comments also reflect growing global debate over AI governance, amid concerns about the technology’s potential use in warfare, cybercrime and terrorism.
Ahead of the conference, China and representatives from 29 countries, including Russia, Pakistan and Indonesia, agreed to establish the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organisation, which will be headquartered in Shanghai to promote the safe and orderly development of AI.
The conference has drawn world leaders and technology experts, including United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, to discuss the future of artificial intelligence.
