Lionel Messi dismisses claims that Argentina has benefited from favorable officiating at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting the reigning champions have earned every step of their journey.
The Argentina captain spoke after Argentina came from behind to defeat England 2-1 in Wednesday’s semifinal, sealing a place in Sunday’s final against Spain.
Trailing 1-0 until the 85th minute, Argentina produced another dramatic comeback, adding to a tournament filled with resilient performances. The South Americans also survived extra-time battles against Cape Verde and Switzerland, and overturned a 2-0 deficit in the closing stages to beat Egypt 3-2.
However, Argentina’s run has drawn criticism from some fans and opponents, with Egypt coach Hossam Hassan, and Switzerland’s coaching staff questioning refereeing decisions. Social media has also been flooded with unfounded claims that FIFA has favored Argentina’s path to the final.
Messi rejected those accusations, saying Argentina’s success is built on consistency and determination rather than outside influence.
“We’ve been the best over these past four years, whether people like it or not,” Messi said. “We’ve shown again that we belong among the top two teams in the world. That proves everything we’ve achieved is no fluke, and that nothing was handed to us.”
