Six European countries are set to gain access to Moderna’s respiratory syncytial virus vaccine after the company secured a supply agreement with the European Commission.
The deal will provide Austria, Denmark, Ireland, Luxembourg, Norway and Portugal with access to up to 24 million doses of the vaccine over a period of four years.
Moderna said its RSV vaccine, mRESVIA, will be supplied in ready-to-use, single-dose pre-filled syringes to make administration easier for healthcare workers.
The agreement follows a similar joint procurement arrangement between Moderna and the European Commission for COVID-19 vaccines.
mRESVIA is authorised in the European Union to prevent lower respiratory tract disease caused by RSV in adults.
RSV is a common respiratory virus that causes seasonal infections and is a major contributor to pneumonia and deaths among infants and older adults.
Moderna currently has four approved mRNA vaccines for respiratory infections, including a combined influenza and COVID-19 vaccine authorised in Europe.
