In a fresh push to curb irregular migration, the European Union has unveiled a proposed sanctions regime targeting migrant smugglers, human traffickers and organised crime groups.
The framework would allow authorities to impose asset freezes and travel bans on individuals involved in facilitating illegal migration.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the measures are aimed at dismantling criminal networks and protecting migrants from exploitation.
“We all have a common goal: to drive them out of business and save the lives of thousands of people who dream of a better life,” she said.
She added that Europe must have control over who enters the bloc and under what circumstances. The proposal requires unanimous approval by the European Council before implementation.
The move comes amid renewed debate over migration policies in the EU. Last month, the European Parliament approved reforms designed to speed up deportations and allow offshore detention centres.
The measures have drawn criticism from countries including France and Spain, with opponents warning that they could undermine asylum protections and create harsher conditions for migrants.
