The Akwa Ibom State Government says it has committed the bulk of its 2026 budget to capital expenditure as part of efforts to drive infrastructure development and build sustainable sources of growth for the state.
Speaking during an interview on ARISE News on Sunday, Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Information, Aniekan Umana, said the state government deliberately prioritised capital projects over recurrent spending in its budget allocations.
“In Akwa Ibom, for instance, even in 2026, out of the annual budget of 1.584 trillion, about 74% of that is allocated to capital and 26.3% to recurrence.”
According to Umana, the spending structure reflects the administration’s focus on long term investments that can strengthen the state’s economy and improve self sustainability.
“That shows you where the government is going. It’s looking at investing in sustainable projects and things that will help grow the state.”
He added that the administration was intentionally pursuing projects capable of generating value beyond the current tenure of government.
“We must begin to look at how we can develop these subnationals to be able to work and sustain themselves even if we have no other revenues.”
Umana said the budgetary direction aligns with the vision of Governor Umo Eno’s administration to strengthen the state’s economic foundations through strategic investments.
“That’s the way to go. And that is the direction the government of His Excellency Pastor Umo Eno is doing in Akwa Ibom State.”
