As of Thursday, 151 Kenyans had returned home after being evacuated from South Africa under an emergency government repatriation programme prompted by escalating anti-immigrant tensions.
While they escaped the violence, many came back empty-handed, leaving behind homes, businesses and years of investment. They now face an even tougher reality after being barred from returning to South Africa for the next five years.
More than 200 Kenyans had appealed for evacuation as fears grew ahead of a June 30 deadline issued by groups demanding that undocumented migrants leave the country.
