Former Big Brother Naija housemate Leo DaSilva has advised Nigerians to consider recording video wills as an additional way of communicating their final wishes and reducing the likelihood of disputes over their estates.
In a post shared on X, DaSilva argued that biological relationships do not always reflect genuine loyalty or closeness, noting that some relatives may have little involvement in a person’s life but later emerge to lay claim to their assets.
He encouraged people to clearly state how they want their property and belongings shared after their death, saying documented instructions can help avoid misunderstandings among surviving family members.
According to the reality TV personality, video recordings can also provide added clarity by capturing a person’s intentions in their own words, making it more difficult for disagreements to arise over their wishes.
DaSilva said people should not assume that every blood relative automatically has their best interests at heart, stressing that family ties alone should not determine who is entrusted with a person’s legacy.
“I wish people understood that blood relatives can still mean nothing in the grand scheme of things. They could be your enemies, and they could actually not even be in your life,” he wrote.
He added that this is why he frequently recommends video wills, saying they can help ensure a person’s intentions are clearly understood and prevent those they did not consider close from being mistaken for family simply because of biological ties.
While video recordings may help clarify a deceased person’s wishes, the legal requirements for making a valid will vary by jurisdiction, and individuals are generally advised to comply with the applicable laws governing estate planning.
