Veteran Yoruba actor Taiwo Adeshina, widely known by his stage name Elegbeje Ado, has died after a brief illness.
According to reports, Adeshina passed away on Monday, June 29. News of his death was made public the following day by fellow Nollywood actor Kunle Afod in a tribute shared on Instagram.
Afod described the late actor as one of the icons of the Yoruba film industry, praising his lasting contributions to the growth of Yoruba cinema and the memorable performances that endeared him to audiences over the years.
He also extended his condolences to Adeshina’s family, friends, colleagues and admirers, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.
Throughout a career that spanned more than two decades, Adeshina earned a reputation for portraying traditional rulers, respected elders and other culturally significant characters in Yoruba films.
His stage name, Elegbeje Ado, originated from one of his most celebrated screen roles and eventually became the identity by which he was widely recognised in the industry.
Beyond acting, Adeshina was also a Christian minister, balancing his pastoral responsibilities with his work in filmmaking.
His passing marks the loss of a respected figure in Yoruba cinema whose performances and dedication helped shape the industry’s growth and left a lasting impression on colleagues and audiences alike.
