South Africa head coach Hugo Broos entered the FIFA World Cup record books on Sunday despite his team’s elimination from the tournament.
At 74 years and 79 days old, Broos became the oldest coach to lead a team in the knockout stage of a World Cup, surpassing the previous record held by Uruguay’s Oscar Tabárez, who was 71 during the 2018 quarter-finals.
The milestone came in South Africa’s Round of 32 clash, where the Bafana Bafana suffered a 1-0 defeat to co-hosts Canada.
Stephen Eustaquio scored deep into stoppage time to send Canada into the Round of 16 and end South Africa’s World Cup campaign.
