Thirty previously detained persons cleared and released, while authorities vow to track down everyone linked to the brutal killing of Islamic teacher Malama Ummulkhairi…..
The Kaduna State Police Command has arraigned 17 more suspects over the mob killing of Malama Ummulkhairi, an Islamic teacher who was allegedly attacked and killed in Maraban Jos after being accused of stealing children.
The development comes as the police intensify efforts to ensure that everyone connected to the incident is identified and prosecuted.
In a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Mansir Hassan, the newly arrested suspects were brought before the court on June 25, 2026.
The police also revealed that 33 other suspects have already been charged with offences including criminal conspiracy and unlawful assembly following the completion of preliminary investigations into the incident.
At the same time, investigators cleared 30 people who were earlier arrested in connection with the case. According to the command, evidence gathered during the investigation showed they had no involvement in the mob attack, leading to their unconditional release.
Despite the latest court arraignments, the police said the investigation is far from over, stressing that efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest every individual who either took part in the killing or played any role in facilitating the crime.
“The Command reiterates that investigations remain ongoing. We are intensifying efforts to identify and apprehend all individuals who participated in, or aided, the commission of this heinous crime. Every person found culpable will be brought to justice,” the statement read.
Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Rabiu, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to ensuring justice for the late Ummulkhairi while maintaining peace and public order across the state.
He also appealed to residents to remain calm, obey the law, and continue cooperating with security agencies by providing credible information that could assist investigators.
The killing of Malama Ummulkhairi triggered widespread outrage across the country, drawing condemnation from security agencies, civil society organisations, and community leaders. Many described the incident as another disturbing example of mob justice and called for those responsible to face the full weight of the law.
