Nollywood actor Deyemi Okanlawon has spoken in defence of fellow actor Alex Ekubo, expressing concern over what he described as the persistent criticism directed at the actor despite his good character.
Speaking during a recent episode of the CreativiTea Podcast, Okanlawon described Ekubo as someone with a kind heart and questioned why people are quick to attack individuals who consistently show goodwill.
Reflecting on what he has observed, Okanlawon said the growing culture of tearing people down sends the wrong message and fails to reward sincerity and positive values.
“I watched people tear this guy down… and I’m looking at our people, and I’m like, how? That’s the environment that we’re trying to build in a place where good is not appreciated,” he said.
The actor urged people to show greater compassion, noting that everyone faces personal challenges and may make mistakes. Rather than adding to public criticism, he said choosing not to engage in negativity is often the kinder response.
“Can we just be kind to one another? People are going through stuff. People have made mistakes, whatever the case may be. The kindest thing that you can do is not to engage,” he added.
Okanlawon further warned that a society that applauds corruption and mediocrity while attacking integrity and excellence risks discouraging people from striving to do what is right.
According to him, such an environment not only diminishes the value of good character but also pressures people to hide their authentic selves for fear of being unfairly judged.
