The Vice Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, on Thursday night paid a courtesy visit to former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo at his Kano residence.
During the visit, Kwankwaso introduced the NDC governorship candidate in Kano, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, to the former president.
Although the content of the meeting was not made public, some observers have linked it to early consultations ahead of the 2027 elections, with Mr. Peter Obi leading the NDC as its presidential candidate.
On his verified X account, the National Leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement said: “Last night, I paid a courtesy visit to our esteemed leader, His Excellency Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, at his accommodation in Kano.”
“I was accompanied by the former Deputy Governor and our gubernatorial candidate, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo,” Kwankwaso stated.
The engagement continued into Friday morning when Kwankwaso led Obasanjo to the Emir’s Palace in Kano. Both leaders attended the turbaning ceremony of Barrister Abubakar Mahmoud, a prominent legal practitioner and political ally.
The former president’s presence at the traditional event drew wide attention from stakeholders and Kano residents.
Reacting to the visit, spokesman of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Dr. Habibu Mohammed, said it should not come as a surprise.
He noted that Kwankwaso served as Governor of Kano State when Obasanjo was President of Nigeria, and both leaders have maintained a long-standing principal-mentor relationship over the years.
Dr. Mohammed added that such courtesy visits are normal among senior leaders, stressing that the NDC, under the leadership of its presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, and vice presidential candidate, Senator Kwankwaso, remained focused on consolidating its structures nationwide ahead of 2027.
