Panic over a suspected bomb blast in Mushin has been laid to rest after the Lagos State Police Command confirmed that Monday’s explosion was caused by a mechanical failure, not an explosive device. The blast occurred on Monday at Wey Street in the Oke Mushin area of Lagos, sparking panic among residents who initially feared a bomb attack near a parked Toyota Sienna.
Eyewitnesses said the vehicle owner was preparing to leave for work when the blast occurred, causing confusion before security operatives arrived at the scene.
The Command said it has concluded its investigation into the incident and ruled out terrorism, sabotage, or any criminal use of explosives. In a statement posted on its official X handle on Thursday, the police said forensic and technical findings showed no evidence of an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) or any explosive material.
It added that investigators found no explosive residues, detonators, initiation systems, or blast patterns typically linked to explosive attacks.
According to the police, the incident was caused by the catastrophic failure of a pressurised mechanical component located outside the affected vehicle, which triggered a sudden release of energy and shattered the front passenger-side glass panels. The vehicle owner sustained minor injuries.
The Command classified the incident as a “mechanical explosion,” stressing that it was not linked to any criminal or terrorist activity.
