Arsenal have won the race for promising young goalkeeper Phoenix Blayney, beating competition from Liverpool and other Premier League clubs.
The Gunners have agreed a deal with Northern Irish side Larne for the 16-year-old shot-stopper, with the club set to receive compensation for his development.
Blayney’s father, Alan, confirmed that the move will be completed this summer following a successful trial period in north London.
Reports suggest Arsenal overcame interest from Liverpool and Nottingham Forest to secure the teenager’s commitment, with only administrative steps remaining before the transfer is finalized.
“Everything has been settled with Arsenal; he merely needs to sign the contract,” Alan Blayney informed the Belfast Telegraph.
He added, “When he turns 17, he will sign a professional contract. It is all agreed upon, and a pre-contract will be signed at the appropriate time.”
Blayney previously trained with Arsenal and also visited Liverpool, but his father said the Hale End opportunity stood out above all others.
“Phoenix enjoyed his time at Arsenal; he felt a connection there and has a great appreciation for the coaches.
“One of his close friends, Daniel McCarron, has joined the club, which is likely one of the reasons for his decision. They both play on the same Northern Ireland team,” he added.
The young goalkeeper is expected to begin his development with Arsenal’s youth setup, where he will work under Under-18 coach Adam Birchall.
