Algeria became the fifth African nation to record a victory at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after overcoming Jordan 2-1 in their second Group J match on Tuesday.
The Desert Warriors rallied from a goal down to secure all three points at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium in Santa Clara, with Nadhir Benbouali and Amine Gouiri finding the net.
The win marked a strong response from the North Africans, who suffered a 3-0 defeat to Argentina in their opening fixture.
Algeria now join Egypt, Ivory Coast, Ghana and Morocco as the African teams to have registered victories at the tournament.
Ivory Coast opened Africa’s winning account with a 1-0 success over Ecuador, while Ghana defeated Panama by the same scoreline. Morocco also claimed a 1-0 victory against Scotland, and Egypt beat New Zealand 3-1.
Meanwhile, Senegal, Cape Verde, DR Congo, South Africa and Tunisia are still searching for their first wins of the competition.
