Russia has welcomed Nigeria’s new ambassador, Prof. Abdullahi Yibaikwal Iji, and pledged stronger cooperation in trade, technology and diplomacy.
The engagement, which took place on Thursday, was confirmed in a statement released on Friday from Abuja by Ms. Daria Senyushina, Communications Officer at the Russian diplomatic mission in Nigeria.
According to Senyushina, Ambassador Iji submitted copies of his credentials during the meeting, marking an official step in the start of his diplomatic assignment.
She noted that discussions between both parties focused on ways to further reinforce the longstanding friendly relationship between Russia and Nigeria.
The talks reportedly explored avenues for deeper political engagement as well as expanded cooperation in sectors such as trade, economic development, science and technology, and humanitarian affairs.
Diplomatic relations between Nigeria and the former Soviet Union have existed for over six decades. Today, Russia maintains an embassy in Abuja and a consular presence in Lagos.
Both nations continue to sustain a broad partnership covering areas including commerce, defense collaboration, education exchange, and energy cooperation.
