The United Kingdom Government has announced the appointment of Peter Vowles as the next British High Commissioner to the Federal Republic of Nigeria, in a move expected to further shape bilateral relations between both countries.
Vowles will succeed Dr Richard Montgomery, who will remain in office until September 2026, when the incoming envoy is due to formally assume duty in Abuja.
According to the UK Government, the incoming High Commissioner brings extensive diplomatic and development experience spanning multiple regions and senior leadership roles within the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and its predecessor department, the Department for International Development (DFID).
Vowles served as His Majesty’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe from 2023 to 2026, and earlier as Ambassador to Myanmar from 2021 to 2022. He has also held several senior positions within the UK’s diplomatic and development architecture, including Transformation Director and Director for Asia, the Caribbean and Overseas Territories.
His earlier career included extensive work in international development across South Asia, Central Africa and East Africa, with postings in Bangladesh, India, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Kenya. He began his professional journey in Zimbabwe, working in education and development.
In his remarks following the appointment, Vowles expressed readiness to deepen UK–Nigeria relations.
“I am honoured to be appointed as British High Commissioner to Nigeria. Nigeria is a country of immense importance to the United Kingdom, and I look forward to working closely with Nigerian partners to strengthen our relationship across trade, development and security.”
