Iran has launched missiles and drones toward US targets in the region, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said in a Telegram post early Wednesday, signalling a sharp military response after the United States carried out retaliatory strikes on Iran.
The IRGC announcement came after Washington said it had launched attacks on Iranian targets following the downing of a US Army helicopter.
Explosions were heard in the Iranian cities of Sirik and Minab, as well as on Qeshm Island, according to Iran’s semi-official Tasnim News Agency.
However, authorities in Minab later sought to clarify reports of an attack on the city. The governor of Minab said that “no attack on the city has been reported,” according to Iran’s semi-official Mehr News Agency.
Mehr reported that the sounds of blasts heard in the inland city originated from the coastal strip along the Strait of Hormuz rather than from Minab County itself.
