Artificial intelligence (AI) is already reshaping modern policing, with security agencies around the world increasingly integrating the technology into their operations.
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, made this known at the closing ceremony of the second AI-POL Leadership Dialogue Workshop in Abuja, according to a statement by Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid.
The workshop, themed “Advancing Innovation, Governance and the Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence in Law Enforcement”, brought together law enforcement leaders, technology experts, and international partners to examine the growing impact of AI on policing.
Disu said the discussions reinforced the urgent need for security agencies to adapt, stressing that AI is no longer a future concept but a present reality in global security operations.
Participants at the workshop examined practical applications of AI in law enforcement, as well as the challenges and risks associated with its adoption. They also reviewed global experiences and strategies to guide the Nigeria Police Force in integrating AI into its operations.
A key highlight of the event was a presentation based on outcomes from the 5th Global Meeting for AI and Law Enforcement, which identified Nigeria as a priority partner for the African AI Policing Pilot project.
The IGP urged participants to apply the knowledge gained beyond the workshop and implement it within their respective commands.
He also commended the organisers, facilitators, and partners for their contributions, reaffirming the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to strengthening collaboration and building a more effective and technology-driven policing system.
