Meta Platforms Inc. has unveiled paid subscription tiers for its major apps as part of efforts to reduce its dependence on advertising revenue.
Meta product chief Naomi Gleit announced in a video shared on Instagram that the company is rolling out Facebook Plus, Instagram Plus and WhatsApp Plus worldwide, with additional subscription offerings planned for businesses, creators and artificial intelligence tools.
The development comes amid investor concerns over the company’s heavy spending on artificial intelligence, with capital expenditure—largely directed toward AI data centres—projected between $125 billion and $145 billion this year.
Following the announcement, Meta’s shares rose by nearly three per cent in trading.
Reports indicate that Facebook Plus and Instagram Plus will each cost $3.99 monthly, while WhatsApp Plus will be priced at $2.99. The premium tiers will introduce features such as advanced analytics, story replay insights, expanded audience reach and enhanced profile customisation on Facebook and Instagram, while WhatsApp Plus will offer personalisation options including premium stickers, custom ringtones and themes.
Gleit also noted that the company plans to eventually unify its subscription services under a single platform called Meta One.
In 2023, Meta introduced ad-free paid versions of Facebook and Instagram in Europe to comply with European Union data privacy regulations, allowing users to choose between free ad-supported access or a paid subscription model.
