The National Librarian and Chief Executive Officer of the National Library of Nigeria, Prof. Chinwe Anunobi, has congratulated Nigerian children and youths on the occasion of the 2026 Children’s Day celebration, urging them to cultivate a lifelong reading culture as a pathway to knowledge, leadership and national development.
This is contained in a Statement signed by Vershima Orvell-Dio, Assistant Director, Information and Public Relations. Abuja, Nigeria, Wednesday, 27 May, 2026.
In a goodwill message issued on Wednesday in Abuja, Prof. Anunobi described reading as a powerful tool for self-development, critical thinking and empowerment, stressing that books remain essential for shaping the future of young people.
“Reading opens doors to knowledge, opportunity and leadership,” she said. “When you read, you equip yourself with the ideas, skills and confidence to shape your future and contribute meaningfully to our country. Let this Children’s Day remind us that every great leader, inventor and changemaker started with a book.”
The National Librarian also assured Nigerian youths that the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the education policies of the Minister of Education are expanding opportunities for formal and non-formal learning across the country.
According to her, the policies are aimed at ensuring that every Nigerian child, regardless of social background or geographical location, has access to quality education and the support necessary to achieve their dreams.
Prof. Anunobi encouraged children and youths to take advantage of the various platforms provided by the National Library of Nigeria, including its nationwide network of book clubs, literacy centres, and digital learning resources.
She further emphasized the importance of reading books and materials that reflect Nigeria’s history, culture, languages and achievements, noting that such knowledge would help young people better understand their heritage and prepare them for the future.
“The National Library of Nigeria remains committed to being a safe, accessible and inspiring space for learning. Through our centres and digital platforms, we are bringing books, knowledge and opportunities closer to you. I urge you to visit us, join a book club and read widely, especially Nigerian content that tells your story,” she added.
Prof. Anunobi reaffirmed the commitment of the National Library of Nigeria to promoting reading culture and lifelong learning in line with national development goals and the institution’s 2025–2030 strategic plan.
