The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has commissioned a 300MVA 330/132kV power transformer at its Katampe 330/132/33kV Transmission Substation in Abuja as part of efforts to strengthen electricity supply in the Federal Capital Territory and surrounding areas.
According to a statement signed by TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the commissioning ceremony took place on Sunday, May 24, 2026.
With the addition of the new transformer, the capacity of the Katampe Substation has increased significantly from 450MVA to 750MVA, providing more bulk power for the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) to distribute to consumers across Abuja and neighbouring communities.
Speaking during the commissioning, General Manager, Transmission, Abuja Region, Musa Shuaibu, said the installation demonstrates TCN’s commitment to the continuous expansion and strengthening of the national transmission network.
According to him, the project is expected to support increased power delivery, improve grid stability, and enhance electricity supply to distribution load centres across the country.
Shuaibu noted that expanding transmission infrastructure remains critical to addressing growing electricity demand and improving the reliability of power supply nationwide.
The project was executed under the TCN-World Bank collaborative initiative, which forms part of ongoing strategic interventions aimed at rehabilitating and expanding Nigeria’s transmission network infrastructure.
TCN said the upgrade would improve operational efficiency at the Katampe Substation and create additional capacity for future load growth in the Abuja region.
The company reiterated its commitment to implementing transmission projects that would strengthen the national grid and support improved electricity access for Nigerians.
