Former Big Brother Naija housemate Queen Mercy Atang has shared details of the physical discomfort she experienced while wearing her viral bread dress at the 12th Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA).
The outfit, which drew widespread attention online, was reportedly made using 500 loaves of bread and designed by fashion designer Toyin Lawani of Tiannah Empire.
Speaking in a BBC interview, Atang clarified that she did not design the outfit herself, explaining that she only wore it for the event after it was prepared by the designer.
She described the dress as extremely heavy, saying the weight placed significant strain on her body and made it difficult to move comfortably.
According to her, the pressure from the outfit caused physical pain, leaving her with injuries on her back after wearing it.
Atang recounted moments of distress while putting on the dress, noting that she had to remove it briefly to catch her breath before attempting to wear it again.
She explained that fittings for the outfit took several weeks, as adjustments were made to accommodate its structure and weight.
Despite the discomfort, she said she agreed to wear it again after initially breaking down due to the strain.
The reality star added that the outfit was also intended as a creative promotional concept for her business, an idea she said was suggested by her stylist.
Atang revealed she initially had no plans to attend the AMVCA this year, as she had prioritised other business commitments.
However, she said her designer eventually convinced her to attend and discouraged her from opting for a simple outfit for the red carpet appearance.
She further noted that she arrived after the red carpet segment had ended but still chose to appear physically at the event to avoid speculation that the images were digitally altered.
Atang expressed surprise at the level of attention the outfit received, saying she expected mixed reactions rather than widespread media coverage and virality.
